The most widely circulated rumor within the Ikibomot Corporation and the school is that the chairman of the corporation ordered the school built in the year his granddaughter was born because no school in the world met the standards that he thought Yurika's education should have. Whether or not this is true, it is a fact that the school's facilities, admissions standards and faculty are among the very best in the world, backed by the prodigious technological and monetary resources of the corporation. In practical terms, the school serves several purposes. It provides an education for the children of Ikibomot employees, many of whom come from foreign countries and find the American schools woefully inadequate. It helps the corporation's public relations by providing a public service. And it serves as a training and recruiting ground for potential future Ikibomot employees.
Although Ikibomot as a corporation maintains a focus in the areas of science and technology, all branches of education are attended to in the school's program. Art and literature, culture and history are as well represented as math and science, and while students may pick their own "majors" to some extent, there is a required core program which ensures that each student graduates with a well-rounded education. The primary language of instruction in the school is English, but almost all of the students are multilingual.
The school charges no tuition, but it is still a "private" school with very exclusive admissions standards. Most of the students are those who would be found in "gifted and talented" programs in standard high schools, although in the interests of diversity and fairness, the school does recruit a fair number of "ordinary" students. It has been noted, however, that even the most ordinary of people who enter Ikibomot High School are usually extraordinary in some way by the time of their graduation.
