Aran Islands -- The Human Landscape

Of course, part of the attraction of the Aran Islands lies with its people, and how they have made this unforgiving piece of land into the most hospitable place they can make it. There is much more history behind the islands and their inhabitants than I have been able to research or write about here. These pictures only hint at the richness of the land and its heritage.

Aran farms

Cows graze in one of the island's many small enclosed fields.

Cows at church

This abandoned church is now the centerpiece of another cow pasture.

Chicks in front of the bar

Chickens have the run of this pub's front yard, at least before opening time.

Sheri at the cliffs Jimcat at the cliffs

Sheri and a rather hirsute Jimcat, living on the edge (that's about a 90-foot drop to the ocean that we were sitting near).

Sheri taking a rest
